Rhetoric and Genres

Before reviewing the sections on Rhetoric and Genres, I thought about if I really know what these words mean. When I hear the word Rhetoric I think of question. So initially, my first thought was that the section was going to be about how the use Rhetorical questions in writing. I understand what genres are but for me it is hard to put into words. If I were to try and describe genre the first thought that comes to my mind is books, movies and music. I have never learned about writing genres before so I was more than interested in reading about genres.

After reviewing both sections on Rhetoric and Genres I learned a lot about both concepts. I also learned that writing is a process and a very important concept of everyday life. I learned that in rhetorical situations you have to make sure to consider many factors such as your audience, the purpose, a certain stance, a genre and a medium. Knowing what type of Genre to use with your audience is very, very important. It is also very important to remember that your audience will take in your writing and and apply it to their expectations and experiences.

After reading about genres, I was very surprised that genres in reading consist of certain ways of how you portray your writing, as in memos, essay, email, note and speech. In genres audience is very important. Identifying your audience, stance and purpose is key.

I learned a lot from both of these readings and I will try my hardest to apply it to my writing. I think that by following both of these concepts and all the steps in using both rhetoric and genres appropriately will really help me beneifit in writing and will help me in the future with school and occupational wise. I found these sections pretty interesting but more helpful. The sections were very imformative and will help me tremendously in my writing.
